he volunteers are working hard to limit the ecological damage caused by the oil spill which is gradually spreading off the south-eastern coast of Mauritius. The ship Wakashio had run aground when it struck a reef a few days earlier at Pointe d’Esny, an important conservation site.

Such a situation harms biodiversity and marine ecosystems, but also key sectors such as tourism and fishing on which the economies of many countries in the region, including Madagascar, depend. The time may have come to tighten regulations for oil transport in the Indian Ocean.
